I personally prefer masks that ignore the features of the face - for instance, a crescent moon.

Brainstorming:
Stained glass, abstract or with a design
Flower - rose, tulip, iris.
Dragon
Sun and moon.
A tarot card, such as the tower.
A pure abstract.
A recognizable painting or at least copy an artist's style.
A punch and judy show with working curtain.
A "found object" collage - got a statement to make about beauty?

As for materials, just go to your local craft store. There are far more neat things to play with than I could ever remember - plastics that melt and mold, clays that fire in a normal oven (how about a millefiori mask?), paste on gems, special effects paint (a graffiti'ed wall?), yarns of all sorts of looks, and the scrapbooking department offers all sorts of things to work with from papers in innumerable patterns and style, to stickers (jungle mask?) to little paper embellishments (I know of one dragon by jolee's that's really cool).

At CSULB you'll be required to take a whole range of courses out of psychology. In your first 2 years, you'll probably be taking more non-psychology courses than psychology courses.

There is one caveat though for Art classes. A lot of schools have separate "schools" within the university for different fields--art is often one of them. A lot of the art classes at CSULB may be for students in the Art track only, though they will have a few introductory courses (drawing, etc.) that will be open to all students. You'll probably have a GE (general education) requirement that gets filled by taking one of those classes, so it won't be a waste of time.

If you are a L&S (letters and science) major you may not be able to minor outside of your "school" but there will definitely be a few courses for you to take--and if you love it, transferring between schools within the university isn't impossible.

to answer ur questions in order:

learned about different values of art and how to do things properly

fav part was gettin to listen to music that we liked and then drawing what came to mind as we listened to the songs

both

yea

somewhat

we learned about art thru the years and i sometimes slept thru the boring ones

sculpture was the best

i would have added more time to work into the courses

My high school art instructor did a great job of teaching our class. It influenced me to dig deeper, and learn more..until i finally said..."art will be my career"

The instructor taught a variety of methods and techniques in art. We did watercolors, oil, acrylics, pastels, oil pastels, graphite, india ink, etching on mirror. Basically a little bit of everything in traditional art. At begining of each class we also hand excerisies to develope better hand eye cordination..sometimes having a student sit on a chair..and we'll all draw him/her. Every week we turned in a sketch of whatever we wanted in our sketchbooks.

He also brought in few ex students..and they showed us their portfolios..what they do...and what we as students can do with art in the real world.

All that info gave me a good stepping stone in all the mediums, and applied it to reality by the end of the school year. It gave me just enough info to figure things out on my own. Art classes in a specific major in college will teach you the rest..but for high school..just techniques and a strong foundation to grow on.

Too many students go into college declaring an art major, when they cant even grasp the basics.
